Hokkoku Kaido Highway

The Hokkoku Kaido was an ancient highway spanning around 520km in length which connected Kyoto to Niigata, passing through Otsu, Hikone, Lake Biwa, Imajo, Nanjo, Echizen (formerly Takefu), Sabae, Fukui, and then stretching to Kanazawa, Toyama before reaching Niigata. You can see the giant horse chestnut tree that stands at Tochinoki Pass at the border of Fukui Prefecture and Shiga Prefecture.
