Akatan Rock Dikes

This is a series of huge rock dikes that were built around 1897 along the Akatani River, a mountain stream that leads to the Takura River, which is a tributary of the Hino River running across Fukui Prefecture. Over 100 years later, these dikes still serve its purpose to this day, preventing landslides while blending into the beautiful natural landscape. This is also one of the Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
