Auxiliary Ship Kanto Disaster Memorial Park

In 1924, the auxiliary ship Kanto ran aground and shipwrecked off the shore of Nuka Beach during a fierce storm. The soldiers, who were thrown into the freezing seas in the middle of winter, made it to shore barely alive, and the local women attempted to save them from freezing to death by using the heat from their bodies to warm the soldiers up. Unfortunately the 97 soldiers eventually died of hypothermia, but the women's efforts to save them are commemmorated in a sculpture that can be found in this park.
