Bashaku Kaido Highway

Connecting the provincial capital Takefu to Kono, the Nishi-kaido, also called the Bashaku Kaido, was an important transportation route together with the Kitamae-bune ships up until the Meiji Period. Dating back to the Muromachi Period, bashaku were cargo carriers who used to transport their cargo on horseback, and served as an important mode of transport.
